Fire Rescue Newsletter - March '10

In light of recent cold weather phenomena across the nation, it's important to take note of the new dangers that these conditions present. Lakes and rivers freeze over, and people can and do fall through that ice into freezing water. If not dealt with quickly, this can be life threatening.

Fortunately, the Coast Guard has teams across the country trained in ice rescue that can be called upon in such emergencies. It should be no surprise that one of the teams called upon most frequently for ice rescue is District 9, the "Guardians of the Great Lakes." In this region, traversing frozen lakes is a commonplace activity for many, but as conditions change it can become extremely dangerous.

The District 9 rescue team is proficient in ice rescue techniques and provides training to nearby fire departments so in the event of a joint rescue, everyone will be prepared. This can be crucial, as demonstrated in the February 2009 rescue of 130 stranded ice fishermen on Lake Erie. In that operation, multiple USCG units worked in conjunction with local fire and law enforcement personnel for a successful evacuation. These teams utilized helicopters and an overhead C-130 airplane to provide long range air traffic control and surveillance.

To be able to function in such hazardous conditions, rescuers must dress appropriately. AFMO carries boots that are ideally suited for these kinds of situations. Specifically Kamik's Workday 2 boots are United States Coast Guard Approved.
