www.AFMO.com: Unique Gear for Unique Missions
Military / Law Enforcement Newsletter - February '10

Urban Shield is the largest, and considered by many to be the best SWAT training exercise in America. Taking place over 48 hours with virtually no downtime (including sleep), Urban Shield consists of 24 scenarios that attempt to simulate tactical situations with a high degree of realism.

Scenarios range from airplane hostage situations, to rooftop firefights, potential school shootings, to a 13 mile trail run. Fellow officers play the parts of the “terrorists” or hostages, as the SWAT trainees attempt to complete their mission swiftly and with minimal collateral damage. Equipped with “Simunition” based weapons, trainees enter a variety of unpredictable situations loaded with X factors like how many hostages, what is the setting, how many enemies are present, what is their position, and so forth.

During these exercises, officers enhance their ability to communicate effectively with fellow officers, are exposed to the latest new technology, and are presented with potential terrorist attack scenarios where the team has to think quickly and work effectively to succeed. Now that terrorism is a worldwide threat, officers must know how to cope when presented with these types of problems.

The next time they are called in to respond to a school shooting, or a hostage situation on a train, or any other type of high-risk situation, they will all know the best way to respond and how to work together to succeed. This will be thanks in no small part to the Urban Shield training in California, where they have will have been exposed to these exact situations and were given the necessary skills and training that they need to complete the mission successfully.
