Police shooting ranges are critical tools for officers to utilize so if worst comes to worst, they will be prepared to use force to detain a suspect without causing any collateral damage or self-injury. However, shooting ranges seem to be going extinct due to increasing financial and environmental concerns.

Environmentally, shooting ranges often pollute lead, arsenic, and other chemicals, and the potentially available property is limited due to the damage that can be caused to the environment / ecosystem. There are a number of solutions to this though, from trap systems that contain lead rounds to “green” frangible ammunition (a technology that has dramatically improved over the last few years).

Most people agree with that they are important in theory, but when there’s a shooting range near their house, they quickly change their tune. No one wants to hear firearms all day, or wake up to the sound of gunshots. The property that can’t be used due to its proximity to homes on top of the property that can’t be used for environmental concerns severely limits the available property.

Even when property is secured, the funding is still a problem. Fortunately, grants to municipal law enforcement agencies have been made available recently through the National Recovery Act. Outside of that, one has to get creative.
